Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in mid-afternoon. The place was packed, but I held off the throngs for a moment or two to capture a shot of the long center aisle. It is a shame the over-treatment this place so often suffers at the hands of so many an HDR photograph. All things in balance, in photography too. William Henry Fox Talbot called photography "the art of fixing a shadow." Nearly 200 years later and the chemical emulsion technologies he helped invent are in their death throes, with the more pure medium of digital here in full force to supplant them. HDR generates "shadows" of its own when used too strongly. And everyone knows two shadows don’t make a highlight.
Here we are again calling things HDR, labeling away.
